Help unbricking my Raidsonic IB-NAS-4220-B

Hi HWguru, thanks for your great support for this old NAS!

I have an old Raidsonic IB-NAS-4220-B and I would like to configure it for my father.
I'm not sure if it had the original firmware or openwrt from Tobias Waldvogel, I used them both.
https://github.com/tobiaswaldvogel/openwrt-ib42x0

I think it probably works, the power adapter has the right voltages and the leds turn on and off with the power button.
But I can't find where I put my IB-NAS-4220-B directory, where I stored all documentation, recovery procedures and configs. And I've read the site nas-portal.org was hacked and gone.

First I connected it to my network, but I couldn't find it in my dhcp server leases, it most certainly had a fixed IP, but I can't remember it for sure.
I also tried to set an ip with arp -s but it doesn't work. I think there was a tool to find the nas and configure it, but I guess this is just for the original firmware and wouldn't work if it had openwrt.
I have also connected a crossover cable from my linux computer to the NAS, but wireshark doesn't get anything at all.

I see it has 10 pins under the disks, and according to sheme.jpg attached picture this is the serial pinout, right?
I have an USB TTL adapter like the one in the attached picture, and I have connected like in the serial-pinout.gif attached picture. First I tried both 3,3V currents with a multimeteter, in the NAS, and in the USB adapter, and they are both ok. If I connect the USB to the computer, it also lights the NAS led. and if I connect the NAS power, it powers the USB adapter when unplugged to the USB port.
I have configured putty for a serial connection with 19200 8-N-1, I have turned on the nas first, then connected the usb adapter to computer, but when I press CTRL+C I get nothing in the terminal.

Which would be the best procedure to bring it back to life?

Hi,
if you did not perform a firmware update then the device should not be bricked.
Without a disk the NAS should boot with default settings and you always get the messages from the bootloader on the serial port.
I think the 4220 does not send any packet during boot on the network.
Did you connect NAS Tx with Adapter Rx?

Hi @HWguru, thanks a lot for your answer!
What is default settings ip address in the factory firmware? and in openwrt?
Is the factory setup.exe tool for first configuration and ip setting available anywhere to download?
I've been scanning several subnets with nmap, but I can't get it detected.

I'm sure I installed Tobias's openwrt in it at some point and it run for years, but I remember I also went back to the factory firmware a few times, to see if it had better smb performance. So not sure if it had factory fw or openwrt when I put it to rest.

I have tried swapping TX and RX cables, but with no success, I can't get it detected in putty.
I also tried with and without the 3,3V pin connected, and with and without a disk connected but I can't get it detected in the network, nor with putty, I guess I must be doing something wrong or there is some hardware fault.

Hi, no matter which firmware is installed you would see messages on the serial console.
If not, there is a hardware issue or the board is bricked what only happens if you did a wrong firmware update.
You don't need a tool for setup. Serial console must work!

Hey guys,
just one additional hint from my side. My board (cortina 3516) will not start with the serial cable connected. I have to start it and plug the serial cable.
Does your board give any live signs like blinking leds or starting a fan or something? When you get it done and you see openwrt booting up in the console, make sure to hit enter, then you get on the commandline. Then you can check for the ip adress with linux commands like ifconfig.

Regards

Hendrik

I own 5 NAS4220 devices (2 with broken ethernet/SATA ports), but can confirm that the SoC is somehow blocked when there are voltage shifts. I properly grounded all my equipment, but sometimes the only help is to connect the serial cable with an isolated Notebook running on batteries.
Even when you see serial output you might encounter strange effects like unable to program flash, etc.
