Is it odd to re-buy a 19 year old NAS-1000B?

Hello!

So I've been a long time lurker on this forum for the last 17 years... and I started off on the forum as a NAS-1000B owner (I've owned other models since then).

I found a NAS-1000B on eBay the other day... and it has still got the box, but it's unlikely to be new.

I've stupidly bought it!... I think purely out of nostalgia? Am I going mad??

They were never that powerful, and obviously IDE... but I was thinking it might be good to go with the other more "retro" stuff I've got like 486's and other machines running Win98/XP.

It's really nice to see this forum still running... especially if I run into problems with it (again).

Any tips for getting back into the world of NAS-1000B?

... does someplace still host all the files from back then??

Obviously the quest isn't to make it super secure, or even super modern... and come to think of it I'll probably have to find an old IDE disk for it

IMHO that's not odd at all.

I still have 3 MvixBox NAS boxes on my LAN - mostly offline (turned off) as they are mostly used as backup of images and other semi-sensitive data.Works perfectly fine in this role if you are not bothered about transfer speeds. Two of them are re-flashed to an older OPENWRT firmware.

Also have a QNAP thats even older.
I do keep these NAS things mostly offline for security reasons, as these old firmware's are known to have vulnerabilities.
Older PC's and OS's are much more fun to play with. :)

Good luck finding any IDE HDD's though - maybe try the junk bin at computer repair shops.

Well it's arrived and it does appear to be completely new, complete with everything sealed inside with all the original contents!
Yeah an IDE drive will be fun to find... but without it, it'd lack authenticity. I sometimes still use them in the original Xbox I hate, but really I could drive that thing from something else at this point... so I may take the hard drive from that.
Does anyone know where I can still find the alternate firmware that I used to use back in the day?

Hi, I like the NAS1000B more than the NAS2000. It may easily be opended without any tool.

Well I powered it on yesterday and it seems to work just fine... after all this time unused!

HWguru: Do you know where I can still find all the nas-2000 alternate firmware files for it? (as archive.org doesn't seem complete)
I'd also love to be able to swap back to the original firmware... so I might try to see if I can get a dump of it too.

How is the NAS going now that you have had time to play with it?

Just recently I installed Linux Mint on a tiny NUC, and of course since so much time has passed since these old NAS boxes came to be, I had trouble connecting via the old smb1/CIFFS network protocol.

Eventually worked out what to do in order to connect to network shares, but auto discovery of windows network shares just escapes me.
Same sort of issue with smb1/CIFFS on windows 10 and even worse on windows 11. Won't bother with LAN sharing old NAS boxes to windows 11 (I like Linux Mint a lot better and probably install it on my win 11 NUC as well).

So just curious with OS you are pairing to this NAS-1000B and any issues with LAN connectivity?

Yeah I use Linux as my main OS on my normal desktops / laptops... but if I was doing file sharing I'd normally turn to NFS. At the moment i use a Synology DS1518+ for that stuff.
No the NAS-100B was bought to be used with some retro hardware (think of late 90's beige tower PC's running Windows 9

and for that it works as well as it did back in the day!
I'd still like to get a hold of the alternative firmware i used to use back then though

I still have one with a first gen pentium CPU with XP on it. Like the cat in the box it neither alive or dead.
Never did find this microsoft Windows 9 vapour OS :hmm:
