Unbricking ICY BOX IB-4220-B

Hello,

I have the following NAS ICY BOX IB-NAS4220-B image and when I tried to update the firmware, it breaks(brick).

I tried to reach it through j2 port by attached scheme (2 RXD,3 TXD,5 GND,10 VCC 3.3V) image and with the help of ft232rl image , but there was no success. I was reading your MRT unbricking guide. Would you tell me how it should happen the connection and the recovery, please? Also, I will be happy if you tell me where I’m wrong.
Thank you.

Will it be possible to recover?

Yes, it will be possible for sure.

1. try to reach the bootloder with the serial 3.3V adapter connected to the serial port
connect GND, 3.3V, Rx of NAS with Tx of adapter and vice versa.
If this works you can reflash the firmware. If not we go to step 2

2.Connect the JTAG signals with the FTDI adapter - Link (Set the Jumper to 3.3V, connect GND, 3.3V, TCK, TMS, TDI, TDO)
With NAS_Flashtool you can reflash the bootloader an then you go to step 1

I willl try to find some JTAG guide. Many links are dead unfortunately.
Maybe this thread helps you although it is for a different board but the procedure is the same.

Merry Christmas,

Everything is ok, but the download link of the program NAS_Flashtool is not working. Is there another place where I can download it?

Yes, the file can be downloaded, I’m going to try the repair of the NAS. Thank you very much. :worthy:

So, let’s if I understand you right. I use J1 of the NAS and of the plate FT232RI Cable Type 4 and then I connect them like the following:

Source code

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
Adapter(FT232RL) - NAS JTAG signal(J1)
RTS - 5 TDI
TxD - 7 TMS
RxD - 9 TCK
CTS - 13 TDO
GND - 10 GND
2VCC - 17 DBGRQ

Then I connect Adapter to the computer and start NAS_Flashtool and go with JTAG Test?

Hi,
be sure that your adapter is jumpered for 3.3V operation.
DBGRQ must be connected with VCC (J1 Pin 1 or 2) of the mainboard and not to the adapter.
Maybe VCC connection of the adapter to the mainboard is not needed. It should be powered by USB. This depends on the adapter.

For the first test you don't need the NAS.
Only connect TDI with TDO of the adapter and run the Test.
You should get a message like "Short plug detected". This ensures that the software and adapter works as intended.

Then connect the adapter with the nas and run the test again.
If it is ok you may flash the bootloader.

Good luck,

After the test, the answer is:

Cable type 4 detected.Short plug detected.

The adapter on 3,3 V. Тhen connect the adapter to NAS.

RxD - 9 TCK
CTS - 13 TDO
GND - 10 GND

NAS JTAG signal(J1)

After that I start the test again ant answer is:

Source code

Some errors detected!

I tried with another adapter(ft232), but the program stopped working(not responding).

Hi,
then try to connect VCC of J1 with VCC of the adapter.
Did you power the mainboard? After having connected all signals you have to turn on the mainboard before running the test.
The error means that there is no communication with the NAS.

I’m sorry for late answer but my adapter wasn’t working properly and I had to order a new one.
I have an access already with the program, after the adapter was connected to nasa with JTAG test I received the following message:

Source code

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
Cable type 4 detected.
Device is in debug-mode - OK

CPU-Type SL3516 detected.

Flash-Manufacturer: 0x01
Flash-Device-ID: 227e-2221-2201
Flash type - OK

I rewrote boot to nasa with this one from the forum.

RedBoot_4220

I want to ask what is next and how to connect the bootloder?

Now you connect the 3.3V adapter to the serial console. You should see the messages from the bootloader.
Then you can flash the parts (kernel, ramdisk, app) of the firmware. The files are loaded through network.

The MRT unbricking guide (IB-4220 behaves like the MRT GIGANAS) and/or this thread about Openwrt on NAS-4220 may help.

Hi,

I connected the device by the instructions, connect through terminal (putty) and I chose option “Y” and "2" (TFTP). After that I wrote the IP and the name of the file, and appears this error:

TFTP Error

I feel like I can’t make the settings of the TFTP server?

Hi,
you are very near to the final!

The TFTP server and the NAS have to be in the same subnet.

Maybe you have to configure your server manually to something like 192.168.2.xx
