With a cross over cable it seems to adopt a standalone (169.xxx.xxx.x) address and I've tried all the suggested addresses to target with the telnet client when I connect via a router (with and without DHCP enabled and with my machine on required subnet each time) and no success - I was going to try and reflash it.
